Your fossil exploration begins with pick-up from your hotel, riad or desert camp in Merzouga or Hassi Labied. Your local driver will meet you at the agreed time and take you away from the main tourist areas towards the rocky desert. Because this is a private excursion, you can travel at a relaxed pace and stop along the way whenever you would like to take photographs or learn more about the landscape.
As we leave the Erg Chebbi dunes behind, the landscape changes dramatically. The soft golden sand gives way to wide rocky plains and dry desert landscapes. It is difficult to imagine that this region was once covered by water, but the rocks and fossils found here provide evidence of a much older natural history.
