One-way route from Rabat to Marrakech

A private 3-day one-way desert tour from Rabat to Marrakech via Merzouga — Ziz Valley, Erg Chebbi camel ride and camp, Todra Gorge, Dades and Aït Ben Haddou.
Our 3-Day Morocco Desert Tour from Rabat to Merzouga is designed for travellers who want to reach the Sahara from Morocco's capital and finish their journey in Marrakech.
This is an intensive three-day route with significant driving, but it avoids returning along the same road. Instead, the tour crosses Morocco from north to south-east before continuing west through the valleys and kasbahs of southern Morocco.
On the first day, leave Rabat early and travel through the Middle Atlas towards Midelt and the Ziz Valley before reaching Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. Ride a camel at sunset and spend the night at a Sahara desert camp.
The second day continues through Rissani and Todra Gorge to the Dades Valley, and on the final day you travel through the Valley of Roses and Ouarzazate, explore Aït Ben Haddou and cross the High Atlas before arriving in Marrakech.

Your private Rabat to Merzouga desert tour begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel or riad. Leave Rabat and begin the long journey south-east towards the Middle Atlas; as you travel inland, the landscape gradually changes from the Atlantic plains to mountain scenery. Continue to Midelt for lunch and a break, then through the Ziz Gorge with a panoramic stop over the Ziz Valley and its extensive palm groves. Continue through Erfoud towards Merzouga, arriving near the Erg Chebbi dunes in the late afternoon depending on road conditions. Meet your camel guide and ride across the dunes towards your Sahara camp, stopping to watch the sunset from the sand, then enjoy dinner and traditional music before a night in a private desert tent. Overnight: Merzouga desert camp. Meals: dinner. Note: this is the longest day of the tour, so an early departure from Rabat is necessary.
Wake early if you'd like sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast at the camp, return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4 and meet your private driver. Travel towards Rissani, historically an important trading town in the Tafilalt; if your visit coincides with a market day you may see part of the traditional souk. Continue through Erfoud towards Tinghir and Todra Gorge, with time to walk beside the river between the high limestone cliffs. After lunch, continue towards the Dades Valley, the landscape changing again past traditional villages, cultivated valleys and unusual rock formations, with panoramic stops before reaching your hotel or riad for dinner and a relaxed evening after the previous day's long journey. Overnight: Dades Valley. Meals: breakfast & dinner.
After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley for the final stage of your desert tour. Travel through the Valley of Roses towards Ouarzazate, passing kasbahs, palm groves and traditional villages, then continue to Aït Ben Haddou, one of southern Morocco's most impressive fortified villages, with time to explore the ksar on foot — its earthen passageways and traditional buildings — and views over the valley from the upper part of the village. After lunch, continue towards the High Atlas Mountains, following the mountain road through dramatic scenery with panoramic stops and crossing the Tizi n'Tichka region before descending towards Marrakech. Arrive in the evening, where your driver drops you at your hotel or riad. End of tour: Marrakech. Meals: breakfast.

Our tour prices vary depending on the travel season and accommodation availability. April, October and December are particularly busy months in Morocco, with strong demand for hotels, traditional riads and Sahara Desert camps.
During these peak periods, accommodation providers may raise their rates, which can affect the overall tour price. We recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred accommodation and the best available rates.
Your final tour price is confirmed based on your exact travel dates, number of travellers and accommodation category.
You don't need to travel first to Marrakech or Fes to begin your desert journey — we collect you directly from your accommodation in Rabat.
The tour reaches Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, giving you the classic Sahara experience with large sand dunes, camel riding and an overnight desert camp.
Instead of driving from Rabat to Merzouga and back, this itinerary continues through southern Morocco and finishes in Marrakech.
Although Merzouga is the main focus, the route also includes the Ziz Valley, Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley, Ouarzazate, Aït Ben Haddou and the High Atlas Mountains. Your vehicle is private throughout for flexible stops.
A private tent at a Sahara desert camp near the Erg Chebbi dunes.
A comfortable hotel or traditional riad in the Dades Valley. Different accommodation categories can be arranged according to your budget and preferred comfort level.
Rabat is a considerable distance from Merzouga, so the first day involves a long drive and the third day also covers significant distance before Marrakech. If you have more time, a 4-day Rabat to Merzouga desert tour provides a more relaxed pace.
An early morning departure is strongly recommended so you can reach Merzouga with enough time for the sunset desert experience.
Camel riding is optional — you can travel to the camp by 4×4 at the same price — and sandboarding is included. Quad-bike and buggy activities can be arranged in Merzouga for an additional cost.
June and July can be extremely hot around Merzouga, so desert activities are more comfortable early in the morning and later in the afternoon, while winter evenings in the desert and mountains can be cold — bring warm layers.
This itinerary is a good choice for:
